BIOGRAPHY:

Jill Herlands came to metalwork by accident. She was looking to advance a non-related hobby and instead found a passion in the flame of the torch. Prior to becoming a jewelry artist, Herlands worked in the music industry as an agent. She was drawn to the look of the musicians she represented, which included chunky, statement jewelry. That style is apparent in her current artistic form. Herlands is self-taught, which gives her the freedom to make her own rules. She uses hand-fabrication to coax precious metals into sculptures and is known to incorporate concrete, wood and rough gemstones into her work as well. Herlands possesses a balance and familiarity with what some consider risk- taking. She trusts her instincts, innovation and experimentation to inform her process. Her award-winning work is featured in fashion magazines, galleries and boutiques worldwide. Herlands currently lives and works in Hell’s Kitchen, New York City.

ARTIST STATEMENT:

As a self-taught jewelry artist, I am unbound by rules. My techniques are experimental, and my materials are chosen with contrast in mind. My creative process is one of spontaneity of the form and the composition, while the imperfection becomes the strength of the work. Ever fascinated and curious about the unknown, I trust my imagination, innovation and experimentation to inform my process. Some might consider working without a plan as risky, but to me it is as natural as breathing. I strive to orchestrate both creative tension and unpredictable resolve providing a steady source of surprise and delight. My goal is to have my work elicit the same feeling as watching fireworks explode … the tension as it skyrockets and the ‘ahhh’ in the visual exhale.
