Joseph Cartright

Artist Statement:
Painting on Darkness is how I view my creative process. There are stories, ideas and concepts that I strive to portray, all of which pay homage to the Light, or the lack thereof. When we are in Darkness our feelings change; we feel less secure, spaciously heightened yet unsteady; all of our senses are on overdrive. But when we are in the Light we have not forgotten those edgy feelings, we have simply drowned them out with Light. I aim to evoke those receded feelings of Darkness thru creative lighting and storytelling, creating a space where you don’t know why but you feel safe, yet unsettled. This space allows you to feel romantic, melancholic, happy, jovial, confused, lustful- and it’s all vaguely familiar. Light can do that!
Bio:
Growing up on the streets of New York City, Joseph Cartright was steeped in cultural and artistic influences that only a great city like NY can offer. Bored with his Avionics background, Joseph fell for the dark and playful world of the DJ scene. As a DJ he spun in the uninhibited playgrounds of such clubs as Xenon, Funhouse, and Copacabana. It was a vibe.
Capitalizing on his music interest, he co-produced, produced and engineered many dance classics. Pushing further into the music world, Joseph owned several production/recording studios, including John Lennon’s Record Plant Studio D.
Restlessness setting in again, he embarked on a parallel career in the technology business. After that restlessness was overtaken by reality, he decided to meld his art, engineering and technology backgrounds into photography. Grinding together these once fundamentally separate disciplines is Joseph’s unique and sublime talent. His ability to conceptualize and bring to fruition his ideas; his knack for building technically precise lighting sets and his polished production skills are the result of a lifetime of experience and knowledge. He has garnered the respect and loyalty of many top tier clients- including Victoria’s Secret, Halston, Ralph Lauren, L’Oréal, Wella, Aveda & Escada.
On a personal level, Joseph shares his time with organizations that help those in need of a hand up. Among those are HairAid.Au, an international organization that teaches rescued girls & boys how to perform 5 basic haircuts in a week; greatly improving their odds of living a happier life.
As an Adjunct Professor at Parson’s and a lecturer/influencer for Apple, Microsoft, Xrite, and many others, Joseph connects with and inspires the next generational brew of artists.
Joseph is as driven, talented and diverse as the great city he lives in!
